Brucella is a genus of gram-negative bacteria that can cause infections in animals and humans. There are several other terms and synonyms that are used to describe this bacterial genus, some of which include Brucellaceae, Brucellidae, and Brucellosis. Brucellosis is a disease caused by Brucella bacteria and is also known as undulant fever, Malta fever, or Mediterranean fever. The genus name, Brucella, was given in honor of Sir David Bruce, a British microbiologist who discovered the bacteria in 1887.
