"NIPI" is a term used by the Indigenous peoples of Canada to mean "water." There are a variety of synonyms for NIPI that come not only from the various Indigenous languages across Canada, but also from other languages. In Ojibwe, one might use "ziibi" or "aaniniwok"; in Cree "nipiy" or "atikoswew"; and in Inuktitut "natsiq". Alternatives to NIPI in English include "aquatic" or "hydro". All of these words are used to evoke the powerful and life-sustaining force of water, which has deep cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous peoples, and indeed for all of us who share this planet.
