The sural nerve is a sensory nerve that provides innervation to the skin of the lower leg and foot. It is commonly known as the posterior cutaneous nerve of the leg or the lateral sural cutaneous nerve. Other synonyms for the sural nerve include nervus suralis, lateral sural nerve, and small saphenous nerve. The nerve arises from the tibial nerve and the common peroneal nerve, and then traverses the lateral aspect of the leg to eventually innervate the outer part of the foot. It plays an important role in conveying sensations such as pain, pressure, and temperature from the lower leg and foot to the brain.
